The Blacksmith Backstage Pass is an opportunity to see and experience the art of blacksmithing as it was done at the turn of the 20th century.
Demonstrated by an expert from Kilroy's Workshop, you will see the process of starting and maintaining a coal forge, heating metal to a high temperature, and shaping the hot metal with hammer and anvil. The coal fire's size and shape is adjusted according to the job, and the hand-crank blower helps control the temperature. In addition to the hammer and anvil, various tools are used to perform specialized tasks.
Guests will be able to see things "up close", ask detailed questions, and can optionally participate with simple tasks as a Blacksmith's Apprentice. The forge area will be smoky and dirty, so dress appropriately. No open-toed shoes, please. Guests will receive a souvenir provided by Western Museum of Mining & Industry to commemorate their experience. (Ages 12+ please).
