mine for ore deposits (chocolate chips & nuts)
within their property (a cookie) after purchasing mining
equipment. Students also learn about reclamation and
its importance to the mining industry and to the
environment.
Recommended for students and adults of all
ages.
Pikes
Peak or Bust: Exploration
Stations
This activity exposes students to significant geographic
locales, historical figures, the
economics of the Pikes Peak Region, and our burro
mascots Oro and Nugget through four stations.
Reading, writing, presentation, and art are used
prior to a field experience at our corral.
Recommended for 4th & 5th grades.
The
Fire Assay
Visit our assay shop and explore the social and material
history of the Assayer in the mining camps of the West. An
introduction to the chemistry of the fire assay can be
incorporated. Viewed from a broad historical context, this
program walks the group through the fire assay process (does
not include firing a sample). The Fire Assay
demonstrates the practical application of chemistry to
industry, both past and present. Teachers are provided with
a reference sheet noting some of the chemical reactions
occurring throughout the process.
Recommended for middle or high school science
classes.
