A
young museum visitor explores one of the
interactive elements in WMMI's award-winning mural
illustrating the history, and possible future, of
mining in the American West. On April 16, the Arts/Business/Education Consortium presented the Western Museum of Mining and Industry with its 2003 Unique Project in the Community Award for our "Making of a Mural" project. Each year, the A/B/E Consortium recognizes teachers, businesses, and community members who have contributed significantly to arts education in the Pikes Peak region. With this award, the group praised the collaboration among the museum, Colorado Council on the Arts, the Lewis-Palmer High School Arts Department and Manitou Springs artist, Steve Wood; as well as the 200-square-foot mining history mural now on permanent display in the museum's main lobby. This colorful, hands-on mural timeline is now an integral part of the museum's Colorado history programming for K-12 students and the visiting public. |
