The Western Museum of Mining and Industry has
achieved the highest recognition for a museum,
accreditation by the American Association of
Museums (AAM). Initially accredited in 1979, the
museum must undergo a subsequent review at least
every ten years to maintain accredited
status.

AAM accreditation signifies excellence within the
museum community. It is a seal of approval and
indicates a museum's commitment to accountability,
high professional standards, and continued
institutional improvement.
Of the
nation's nearly 16,000 museums, only 752 are
currently accredited. In the Colorado Springs area,
the Western Museum of Mining and Industry is one of
three museums accredited. The museum is dedicated
to educating the public, including over 15,000
schoolchildren each year, about the history and
continuing contributions of mining in the American
West.
